Roman Theater of Orange, a stunningly preserved amphitheater built around 40 BC. It offers a stunning backdrop with exceptional acoustics. The Chorégies d'Orange is the oldest festival in France, dating back to 1860, and many of the world's greatest opera singers have performed there.
From 1971 onward, when the ‘Nouvelles Chorégies’ were founded, the Roman theatre turned entirely to modern lyric and musical works, immediately meeting huge success. The opera has an undisputed international reputation and gathers many music fans from around the world.
There was a festival which was organised in Rome in 1860 but it was only in 1869 when the theatre performed for the first time that it gained popularity. The name Chorégies comes from the Greek word, meaning choir leader. All the major players of the French classical stage appear in the Orange festival.
The Festival is now an international success with artists from across the globe performing here.
